Family Gatherings

Is it difficult for you to participate in conversations at family gatherings? If so, what do you do to try to improve the situation? Also, if it is difficult, how does it make you feel?

  1. I've been fortunate, all my hearing and deaf family members are fluent in American Sign Language. My family gatherings are the envy of my friends. I feel terrible for them and I wish their families would learn and use ASL.

  2. When I am with my family, they try to remember to face me when they are talking. Then, we try reduce the noise in the room by turning off the tv and music. My family gets my attention first before talking to me.

  3. When I can't hear someone I lean forward and ask "What?". They repeat the sentence and I unerstand.

  4. It is very hard to get together with my family. I even sometimes feel left out because I'm hard-of- hearing and I don't understand what they are saying.
